Web 2.0 is actually a work in progress, I don't think anyone really knows what it is, what its going to be like, or when we will actually be there, but everyone wants you to believe that they are the expert.
In fact, I had to look it up on Wikapedia, and heres what I found:
"Web 2.0 is a term describing the trend in the use of World Wide Web technology and web design that aims to enhance creativity , information sharing, and, most notably, collaboration among users. These concepts have led to the development and evolution of web-based communities and hosted services, such as social-networking sites, wikis, blogs, and folksonomies. "
Well I'm not an expert on Web 2.0, but I have some ideas as to how you can make use of it to market a product more effectively. It's based on my concept of exactly what Web 2.0 is.
From the standpoint of marketing, Web 2.0 is about the increased usage of the web for social connections, and the increased usage and spread of multimedia. Marketing and commerce are a critical part of human life, and an increasing portion of the Internet, so while Web 2.0 is much more then this, the commerce aspect of Web 2.0 is very central to the entire movement.
Social networking translates directly into marketing in the form of contact lists. More specifically, a friends list equals a contact list. Multimedia translates directly into marketing in the form of ADVERTISEMENT. Video and audio presentations equal promotional opportunities.
Since social networking sites have become incredibly popular, the search engines, particularly Google, are paying very close attention to mega and micro trends that develop in these small and sometimes not so small communities. They are tracking what the members of these communities are looking at, what they are bookmarking, and what seems to interest them.
The fact that Google is watching should be a huge blinking beacon to the internet marketer. It shows us the path to getting ranked higher in Google searches. Here's one way it can be done, and before I start, be advised that it's a LOT of work.
The first step is to put a page on as many social sites as you can comfortably manage. If you don't attend to them periodically, they become useless, like fruit rotting on the vine. A large part of how effective this strategy will be depends on how popular the network you are about to construct is, and a stale site will drop off in vaule to the overall network surprisingly quickly.
So the content that you will add and change must be both fresh and interesting to make this strategy effective. Blogging and video are two great ways to make this happen, and be advised that the blogs or videos do NOT have to be original content. In fact, just the opposite.....if your original content is not exciting, it would be BETTER to find content that is.
OK, so now here you are, with a lot of social networking sites and you are keeping them fresh with blogs and borrowed videos. This "foot print" has obviously increased your web presence. The next step is to cross-link your social sites with social bookmarks, blog links and hyper links....further increasing your web presence.
The next step is to link in your commercial pages, which in turn will bring those pages into higher visibility. Organic search engine optimization of your commercial pages is essential, because all this networking wont be of much help if your commercial pages don't have some searchable value on their own.
Another essential step is to find another marketer who has a respectable footprint and cross link with their social network. ANY friends will do, of course, but the more popular, the better. One of the more recent criteria of search engine ranking is the rankings of the pages that link to yours.
According to an article by Chris Heng, entitled "How to Improve Your Search Ranking On Google" Mr. Heng asserts
"Since Google ranks your pages according to the number of links pointing at your page, it stands to reason that you should try to get as many links pointing at your pages as possible. This is so obvious that I'm only mentioning it for completeness sake."
Earlier in the same article, Mr. Heng relates
"As many of you are probably already aware, Google ranks a page according to the number and quality of links leading to that page. For example, if your page has 100 quality links leading to it, it will rank higher than another page that has only 20 links pointing at it. Quality links come from pages that are themselves "important" (Google's own terminology)."
If the people who network with you are themselves marketers, this is better. If they are marketers offering a compatible product or service, that's even BETTER!
Finally, call the attention of the search engines and the public to all this networking you have done with new, original videos, links from classified ads, press releases, and other new content or advertisement.
Bottom-line...all this networking increases your visibility to the search engines, and gets you a higher ranking in the searches. This in turn gets you found when a search is made for your product! But your constructed network has to be large, and stay fresh to be most effective. This is known as back-linking, and the more relevant and numerous the links are to your page, the more popular YOU will be in the searches.
